The Michael Shermer Show # 443
In the wake of several controversial rulings by the Supreme Court and the on-going debate about how the Constitution should be interpreted, Jacobs tried to get inside the minds of the Founding Fathers by living as closely as possible to the original meaning of the Constitution.
He asserted his right to free speech by writing his opinions on parchment with a quill and handing them out to strangers in Times Square. Because women were not allowed to sign contracts-he attempted to take over his wife’s day job, whic...

The Constitution may not be perfect, but it’s better than what we have now.
Whats the point of having toys if ya cant play with them..
good topic
He missed the entire point of the Bill of Rights. It's not about what people are allowed to do, but about what government is forbidden to do. As in, it's not about freedom of speech/the press through handing out handbills written with a quill-- the technology is irrelevant since the whole point was that government is forbidden to meddle in the things placed out of reach of the government by the Constitution. If you don't understand the point, you'll come to the wrong conclusions every time. (I am not a constitutionalist, believing instead that documents don't create or protect rights, and that the "right" to govern others can't exist or be created.)
30:09 “…what religious credences are supposed to do is define your group identity. It actually helps to have ones that are a bit irrational or incoherent, or maybe, even, false.” Professor Van Leeuwen claims the outlandish elements of religion are intended to serve an essential purpose. Along those same lines, may it also be construed that any big name religion must also feature an omniscient, omnipotent central character as its superior deity? For, what is distinctive and influential about any religion if its supreme, infallible god can’t intervene in the everyday lives of its vulnerable and naive human subjects?
Other than Police at Airports etc, I've never seen a gun in the UK.
It would be so nice if Michael Shurmer was to stop using some of the known identified 95% or 98% cases to support the assumption that it applies to 100%. The interesting cases are not the explained ones. And one example of an explained case is not a scientific method to explain 100% cases. Otherwise we would say « there cannot be an Einstein because 95% of people are not Einstein ».
The point about having a monthly column vs daily pieces is something I'm turning over in my head right now too... Rick Beato just put out a video talking about how it's so easy to crank out music now, and the worth of working for music, both in the making and the aquisition and enjoyment. A monthly column not only gives me, the reader, a chance to digest like you said, to walk the world with it and integrate realizations and reflections, but it also is a product of you evaluating what's worth writing. You, with your experiences and insights notice what keeps coming up for you as you think about perhaps unrelated things in the world and events over the course of the month, and we get the benefit of your particular distillation. How to keep this aspect while everything speeds up with AI and all the societal changes that are challenging us on the horizon is something I'm mullling intently recently and this conversation was very interesting to many ends.
Longer info is required to explain complex concepts, broadly speaking. :)
Please dont use music under theses
This is the only cogent explanation of the Palestinian Israeli situation that I have ever heard. Everything else I’ve heard sounds like obscurantist bullshit in comparison. Thank you Einat and thank you, Michael Shermer, for giving her the time to lay out her ideas and evidence so thoroughly. Brilliant!
I am praying for peace and the right to self determination to the Palestinians. Free Palestine! /Stop the occupation and genocide!
Gaza wasn't occupied since 2005 and still Palestinians refused to use their right to self-determination and instead they prepared for another hopeless war. So you are praying for more violence so I wonder which God would listen to your prayers , in fact after 100 years of pointless Arab violence against Israel it seem Palestinian's God is looking the other way.

It sounds good but in essence it won’t work why ? Because it is not the Quran narrative ! We have to understand the Arab mentality ! Hope it will come to fruition, but sadly I don’t see it happening in the foreseeable future !!!
Maybe to an alien intelligence the "tree" doesnt look like a tree at all. Maybe they will conceptualise the negative space of tree and the tree as one unit. Who knows? Its our cognitive apparatus that arranges the fundamental entities to make it appear as what we have named a tree distinct from its surroundings. So it is our consciousness which is giving the tree its identity. That is what Cristoph is trying to say but Miachel Shermer with his low IQ wont understand.
Our "leaders" need to pick up a Bible. UFOs are the creation of the antichrist. A lie made up by the devil for the devil. He was a liar and murderer from the start. The prophecies of Habakkuk describe what they do. So much profit from speculation and "investigation" but no glory to God. The Lord declares what is right, the Lord declares what is true. He tells the end from the beginning for there is no God like the God of Israel, the God of our Bibles, the God of the oldest book on earth....but we still don't get it <sigh>. SMH right back at you, sharky-poo.
Why the Jews ? Jews never saw themselves as victims ! Jews never played the blaming game ! Jews never held out the begging bowl! We have a different mindset !!!!

Religious belief is in many ways a flight from temporality. There could be other things like an impoverished culture of imagination in our time (maybe folklore, wild tales and the like serve a deeper need, from when we lived in villages). But I think it's likely the reluctance to embrace duration.
Sadly, there will never be peace, the mind set for violence is entrenched into men’s mind , however we should never stop trying to achieve this elusive peace we all want. Not until Messiah returns there will be wars. The only peace is found in acceptance of Yeshua(Jesus) our Messiah.
it's amazing we have even bothered to build out our civilizations since the development of the nuclear age. What's the point?
The problem with deriving our moral values from a daity is that, for this to work, we have to have have those values defined arbitrarily in a text so that they can be enforced in a consistent and fair way. And this system, which relies upon a text, is intrinsically arbitrary and thus immoral. What should govern our behaviour towards others is our empathy for their suffering.
The ultimate question is not about the existence of God. That’s a fallacy baed on traditional religious thought. The idea of God or gods arose as a product of the need for primitive societies to develop a collective matrix of meaning that had certain functions within the functionality of those societies. It involved a collective willingness to use the imagination to subscribe to certain pretend facts about the supernatural and play a religion game. God or gods are simply characters in the religious game. Theology and religion are a game. Often this game plays into the hands of those who want to exert power dominance over a society. The ultimate question however is much simpler and requires the stripping away of religious ideas and theology. The ultimate question is simply, do we live on a universe that cares for us? Or, even more simply, does our existence have meaning for the universe?
If free will is a faculty of a moral society, can we improve it by becoming more educated about the nature of our brain and behaviors?. I feel like the more we know, the more degrees of freedom we will earn. I like Dan Dennett's example of a rolling rock down a mountain vs a skier going down a mountain, and also the example of a sailboat with and without a sailor. In the case of the sailboat, i see the sailboats maneuverability and the sailors skills, as our thinking tools and our ability to utilize them. And the wind could be the deterministic situations nature puts us in.
If only they knew about Zealandia

😂😂😂 Einat Wilf, the Zionist Cruella! Rabbi Michael seems to have a crush on this type of dominatrix as he keeps inviting her over and over again. 😂😂😂
I love the portraits of your family: are you guys all yellow, bold , toothless and with not front cortex?
Totally with you. I don’t see how the universe and all the systems within it would cease to function as systems if there was no consciousness to observe it. That’s nonsense. It’s the same kind of make belief that says that fairies exist just because we choose to believe in them.
“You didn’t directly feel your brain.“ Try telling that to someone with a migraine
Einat & Michael, Notice the odd intelligence failures on XVII and IXXI! It's the same Zionist false flag scam. The IXXI nuclear genocide in NYC was designed and executed by Zionist traitors within the US government in collaboration with foreign agents in order to initiate the Middle East Wars for the benefit of the greater Israel Zionist project! We all know the unspoken truth in the USA and the Zionist genocide in Gaza! Shalom, Kilroy NYC
you: "Notice the odd intelligence failures " A classic fallacy called survivorship bias Reality works like this: someone success to attack = someone else failure to prevent the attack All the other failed attacks don't go to history because ...they failed. any more fallacies, innuendos, baseless opinions you would like to share?
The only way to achieve peace is to frame everything from the perspective of the colonial settlers state and ignore the rights of the native indigenous population to their homeland. It really mimics how "savage" native Americans fought against white colonizers. All the delusional comments I read below the video vindicates what Abby Martin and Norman Finkelstein said about the kind of society and the psychology of the settlers. They eerily resemble Hitler and Nazi Germany.
It's unfortunate Norman Finkelstein is now insane and who the hell is "Abby Martin" ?!?!? It doesn't matter how you like to reframe historical facts in a delusional fantasy. The Palestinians had the opportunity to create their own state in 1948 like the other "native indigenous populations" under the post WWI Mandate administration but they reject it for obvious antisemite reasons...they started a war and they lost it. Still Gaza and West Bank were free for ~20 years and still they didn't want to work on building a state but terrorists oraganizations. They say "if you don't use it, you lose it" and apply perfectly to the right of self-determination of the Palestinians. you: "They eerily resemble Hitler and Nazi Germany." Nope, because if Israeli resembled the Nazis , the Palestinians would love them and they don't. remember how the Palestinians were eager to be in a relation with Mussolini and Shitler?
👏
Maybe your life is impressed into time and when you have the experience of getting back all your memories and language abilities you are outside of time’s seeming linearality and aware of your life as a nugget that is available as a gestalt.
It’s quite incredible that it took this “really smart woman“ with tons of college degrees, intifadas in the early 2000s, and the October 7 holocaust, to realize the simplicity that Mayer Kahana understood in the 1970s and 80s and was yelling from the rooftops but no one would listen. And of course, she won’t even dare quote his name even though she’s quoting him the whole time.
The sheer ignorance here is astonishing to watch...
Quoting Adolf Hitler in an interview, far-right Israeli politician Moshe Feiglin has described Palestinians as “Islamo-Nazis” and called for Gaza to be turned into “Hebrew Gaza.” “We are not guests in our country. It is our country, all of it,” he told Israel’s Channel 12 on Sunday. “However, we figured a way to deal with them (Palestinians) somehow … But they showed that they represent the deepest form of Islamo-Nazism.” Feiglin added, “And like Hitler, may his name be erased, said: ‘I cannot live in this world if there is one Jew left in it’, we could not live in this land if even one such Islamo-Nazi remains in Gaza, and not before we return to Gaza and turn it into Hebrew Gaza.”
If we assert God exist, and interacts with His creation, then free will is implicit as the universe wouldn't be determined, but its asserted that God reacts to His creation depending on how His reaction reacted to Him. Now we might ask, "how does God interact with His creation" far be it from anyone to tell God how He can interact with His creation, but we can speculate that God must either violate the laws of physics in His creation, or uses unknown laws of physics, or maybe He directs apparent random quantum events that lead to improbable miracles. If we assumed the last option, then the nature of reality would not be compatible with Copenhagen pure randomness, while apparent but direrected randomness is compatable if the hand of God was nonlocal hidden variables. What if God and our free will acted on the universe through nonlocal hidden variables? Many worlds does not work well with a universe where God interacts with his creation as anything that can happen will happen on its own world line. Free will in a many world universe makes no sense if a single random quantum event can be the push for two different world lines where you marry your wife or dont and both are true. In their respective worldline.
These reprobates…
She’s great
Abrahamic religions are all framed on a single mono myth. The nature of the verbiage is to control and guide many thousands to millions of desert tribes. Religion dovetails with human tribal nature. Abrahamics by conditioning demonize others by holding themselves mentally as chosen. They are not intelligent. Just judgmental.
Humanity finds itself trapped in a relentless cycle governed by a malefic system. How can we get out of it? Even during the Reagan era, nuclear disarmament was not fully achieved, and there were still enough nuclear weapons remaining to potentially devastate the planet. It will happen probably by mistake, if we dont dissapear due to climate change before. It sounds like the Apocalypse of John. Einstein, Nostradamus, the Bible, it is written everywhere. Thanks Annie for explaning the details so well concerning the nuclear side of all this. there is many things i did not know. I need to move in a targeted city with a dooms day chair ASAP.
Nice conversation. However, my uncommon view as an Israeli is that i’m not convinced that it’s moral for Israel to never allow people whose ancestors have been on this land for generations to never return. I get that a majority-Jewish state feels like an existential matter, but I still have a hard time with this idea. It just seems morally wrong to me. The way i see it, all Jews and arabs with familial ties to the land should both have a right to live anywhere between the river and the sea.
you: "i’m not convinced that it’s moral ..." The way nations regulate the movements of people is through bilateral agreements not "moral principles" which often are not well defined therefore only causing more problems. The history of humanity is full of situations where wars forced populations to find an alternative place to live. The other problem with moral principles is Palestinians may think the existence of Israel is immoral...
@@tatonemio6388 I get your point, and still, you would be hard-pressed to find a modern liberal country today who would refuse a segment of its native population from living in their country. Ethically, the very concept of insisting on a jewish-majority state is problematic due to the fact that this land was never really exclusive land to only one nation but rather has hosted all sorts of people throughout history to the point where we now have another group of people who are as deeply connected to the land as the jews. The only reason to support not establishing a truly inclusive state is imo is due to the security concerns of extremist groups who would rather create a civil war.
@@Seanonyoutube Again you are assuming "moral principles" as the main guidance for policies. The laws of a nation must address very pragmatic issues like immigrations and preservation of the nation identity (language, traditions, culture are actively protected) The national identity is the reason we have so many different nations. Unfortunately the Palestinian problem is complicated by the fact that for many of them their identity includes now 100 years of violent opposition to a Jewish state. They feel special among Arabs and Muslims in their frontline battle against the Jews. One must ask the question what is the difference between a Muslim Arab living in Amman and one living in Gaza or Beirut? Same language, same literature, same religion, same or very similar traditions.
@@tatonemio6388 it’s not your place to decide for the Palestinians that they are no different than Lebanese arabs when they in fact feel like a distinct people. And perhaps where we differ most is the supreme importance of preserving a singular national identity. I don’t think this is of upmost importance at all. What matters most to me is that all people with a historical connection to a place should have the ability to live in said place. And since this is my country, I would like to see that reality here, assuming it can be implemented peacefully (which I doubt). Anyway that’s my feeling on the matter.
@@Seanonyoutube you: "t’s not your place to decide for the Palestinians that they are no different than Lebanese arabs when they in fact feel like a distinct people." Actually it is my place to tell the Palestinians if their identity is determined by wanting the Jews not to have their own state on the land of their ancestors. There should be objective and not subjective criteria to determine what make a distinct people other than an history of violence or denial. you: "What matters most to me is that all people with a historical connection to a place should have the ability to live in said place. " Sure but those are not "rights". The ability to move to a place (emigrate) could be archived in many ways for people with good intentions.
